Zechariah uses an illustration which is a key to the whole book and to understanding most of the prophets – the illustration of the early and the latter rains. Agriculture was dependent on these two rainy seasons.
It is astonishing how much we – who see with New Testament eyes – can recognise in this as belonging to the gospel age. We also have tokens, even some relating to the very end of the age. Now is the time to pray, and yet we fail to recognise significant times. If the church really wants to see significant blessing, how is it that it struggles to get its most established families to come to the prayer meeting? We may be asleep on our feet. We must not think we are better than those Jews.
