These words would be unfathomable if the same words were not used elsewhere in Scripture. The ‘corner’ is the cornerstone (Isaiah 28:16); the nail (Isaiah 22:23-25) is a strong peg in a sure place on which to hang things; the battle bow (Zechariah 9:10) is a weapon in the Lord’s hand; and oppressor is better translated captain or ruler. When the national covenant is ended, out of Israel will come the new order, the order of the New Testament church. This will start in Jerusalem and all the apostles and the first evangelists and preachers will be Jews. Christ is, as Paul tells us, a precious cornerstone. He comes out of Israel because he is a descendant of Abraham and David and preserves the royal line. The whole building is aligned with him, and his placement determines the position of every other stone in the temple building – the living stones from which the spiritual temple is built. He is the nail on which all else hangs, for everything in the kingdom of heaven is there because of him and relies on the atonement that he has made. He and his people are the battle bow. There is to be a great battle. People are to battle against their former overlords. The true Israel (the Christian church) will have victory after victory. He speaks as if it had already happened, even though it is future, because it is as good as done.
