Zechariah 11:10

God’s covenant with the nation would end suddenly. Zechariah gives us details concerning the last generation of Jews. Both of the staves held by the shepherd will be broken, and corresponding his merciful treatment of the flock of slaughter would come to an end. First he will break the staff of Beauty or favour. The national covenant will be brought to an end – not just put away for a while, but ended for ever. Yes, there will still be elect Jews saved, but never again will they be blessed simply because of their descent from Abraham; they must now exercise faith just as Abraham did. When Christ comes and judges the nation, the pious will grasp what has happened. They will understand that this is the fulfilment of the prophecies spoken so long before. They knew they had understood correctly. When did this happen? It is not for us to say, but the old writers said it was when the people cried out for the death of Christ.
