Zechariah 12:8

Comments

The message is repeated. That day equals the whole gospel age. Making a comparison between the glory of his own day with the glory of that coming day Zechariah says that the youngest, weakest Christian will be as able as the oldest, most experienced believer to prove the power of grace. Even the feeblest Christian who believes can be a ‘David’; even the weakest is a king. We may be penniless, physically enfeebled, yet the lowliest New Testament believer has so much faith. Think of the exploits of King David: that is how God views every believer. But the great ones, the ‘Davids’ of the past will be correspondingly greater still; they will be as God, as the Angel of the Lord leading by example in their faith and witness. God will strengthen his people beyond any power that the world possesses. The Christian church will have available to it all the power of God. Because of Calvary the conquest of all nations will be secured.

Application

How tragic for that last generation of Jews who interpreted this prophecy literally and saw the destruction of the city by the Romans and concluded that the word of God had failed. The word of God can never fail, but we can fail to understand it properly.

Questions

Many refer these verses to the last days when the Jews return to their own traditional lands and the nations of the world gang up on them. God will then deliver them. Verses 8-10 are said to describe the surrounding of Jerusalem by hostile armies and God’s vengeance on those armies at Armageddon. Some say that this has already been partially fulfilled in that Israel is now an identifiable nation, back in its own God-given territory again. Now it is in a state of unbelief, but God will work in grace and they will return to the Lord in due course.
