Zechariah 13:8

This new church will be brought in on quite different terms – it will be a much purer body. The true church of God will be a people truly saved and sanctified, a people who depend on prayer. The numbers are not precise, but symbolic. It is a minority that will be blessed by God, his little flock. The members of the new order will be those who go through a refining process. The people of God in this new age will not be an entire nation, the nation of Israel, but like the spiritual remnant within Israel, they will be only that select few: the elect among the Jews, supplemented by the elect Gentiles. The remnant of Jews in the time of the fall of Jerusalem to Titus escaped, as Christ had directed them (Matthew 24:15-16), to the mountains of Judea, but these stand for the elect in ages who will all be refined throughout their lives by God’s sanctifying process. The term ‘people of God’ is going to be redefined and used in a much more meaningful and accurate way. We will slip and fall but God will raise us up and see us through.
Application
To whom do we say, the Lord is my God? It is to the Lord we look, for we have no other helper in all our many needs. We speak to the world of what he has done for us, and we desire that others come into the church through our witness. The New Testament church witnesses; the Old Testament people of God failed to carry out their commission to reach the nations with God’s truth. Now we all say, ‘The Lord is my God’, I am going to him: he is my great hope.
