Zechariah 2:10 Commentary and Bible Study

‘Sing and rejoice,’ – this is Christ speaking – ‘O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.’ No longer will it be the Shekinah cloud in the holy of holies in the temple, but Christ dwelling in the midst of his people. That was the meaning of the Old Testament picture. ‘And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day’ – the Gentiles will come in – ‘and shall be my people’, saved Jews, saved Gentiles together on exactly the same terms in the international church of Jesus Christ. Although the nations have opposed Judah and have weighed in on the judgment that God has inflicted on them; and although they will be punished for this, there is another principle at work. The rider on the red horse is going out, but the rider on the white horse is going out at the same time. Some are destined for wrath; others are destined for mercy.And once again – note the repeat – ‘I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee.’ The one sent is distinct from the Lord of hosts, and yet he is dwelling as the Lord among his people on earth. This can be none other than the incarnate Son of God. But this coming is still future at the time of the prophecy. When he comes into the world, his elect people will recognise him: ‘O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me’ (John 17:25). This will compensate them for all earthly trials and hardships; this will thrill their hearts and make them want to serve him.
