Zechariah 2:12

‘And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again’, because Jerusalem will be the starting point. When Christ comes, of course, his suffering and death will be in Jerusalem; when he rises from the dead, it will be in Jerusalem; when he ascends into heaven, it will be just outside Jerusalem; when he sends the Holy Spirit to come down upon the new born church on the day of Pentecost, it will be where? In Jerusalem (Luke 24:49). From Jerusalem will flow the message of salvation into all the world (Luke 24:47). It will start at the literal Jerusalem, but what will come from the spread of the gospel will be the spiritual Jerusalem, the church of Christ, with Christ in the midst of her, and Jews and Gentiles who are elect and saved together in the church.
Application
What confidence the church should have in God’s word. It seems that God always leaves some unresolved problems and questions for each generation of believers to live with. He does that to test their faith, and to give them their own battle to fight and their own enemies to overcome, and not just past generations. But as they look back, they see how many times he has done this before, and how in each case, he did not fail his people but remained faithful. The record of Scripture is to build up our confidence in the Lord.
