Zechariah 2:5 Commentary and Bible Study

‘A wall of fire’ – there will be a mystical protection of the church of Christ. It is the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints: true Christians and true churches will have this mystical protection of God, and the city of Jerusalem will extend right round the world (2:6), and it will consist of many towns or, if you like, churches. Note that God will be the glory in the midst of her. You will see through verses 5, 10, and 11 this phrase keeps recurring: ‘in the midst of her’. Surely the Lord Jesus Christ spoke very intentionally when he said, ‘For where two or three are gathered together in my name [in worship, in prayer], there am I in the midst’ (Matthew 18:20). Again, the narrative of the resurrection seems very specifically to refer back to this, when the risen Christ is said to appear ‘in the midst’ of the disciples, just as the glory of God dwelt in the midst of his ancient people, in the holy of holies in the temple. The temple was a picture of the coming Christ, who is in the midst of his people.
