Comments
‘Ho, ho’ – that is, in the Hebrew, a sort of extended, ‘oh, oh’, or more emphatically, ‘alas’. That is what it represents. ‘Alas, alas’, come forth. What a tragedy! Only a small number of Jews have ever returned to Jerusalem after the captivity. The others are still in the Babylonian Empire. They didn't want to come. ‘[Alas, alas], come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad [scattered you] as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD.’ Yes, I sent you there; I orchestrated your exile as a punishment, but now that is over and I am coming to you again with encouragement, so you should return. ‘Come forth’; come back to your own land. But of course, it would not happen; they were an unspiritual people. Babylon is called the land in the north as she always attacked from the north, coming via Syria.
Application
The application to us today is that there is great blessing for those who commit themselves to the Lord’s work, but if we remain in the world, tied up with its affairs, we will forfeit the blessing; we must leave worldly culture.
