In the next two chapters are two visions that relate, first of all, to the time then, to Joshua, the high priest, and to Zerubbabel, governor of Jerusalem and the regions immediately around, and to the rebuilding of the temple. So far it has not been rebuilt.
Joshua represents the godly remnant, the whole of the people of God, the people under the discouragement of Satan. Satan does this to us; he reminds us of our sin, tries to make us feel unable to approach a holy God. We often think our gloomy doubting thoughts are our own, but they come from our accuser who tries to disrupt the worship of God’s people and the comfort they get from approaching near to their God.
