‘And the angel of the Lord protested unto Joshua’ – he admonished him, he gave him a solemn commission. ‘Thus saith the Lord of hosts, If thou wilt walk in my ways.’ As you read on, you see that ‘his ways’ means, if you will precisely carry out and teach the ordinances of worship as I have given them to you. ‘If thou wilt walk in my ways and if thou will keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.’ And the meaning of the passage is: if you will faithfully see through all the symbolism and the sacrifices and the acts of the temple, then you will be mightily blessed and used. The temple is all message. It is all about the need for reconciliation, all about a holy God and sinful people, and reconciliation and atonement. It speaks of Christ, who is the personal embodiment of the temple. When he comes, the temple will be no more, and will never be again, because it is symbolism, it is prophecy. It is types and shadows all fulfilled and all representing the work of Christ. If you obey, you will have spiritual status, communion with the Lord. Evangelical experience alone leads to being close to God.
