Who has despised the day of small things? Who has felt that the work is pointless because the obstacles are too great? All of them had done this, because all of them had ceased from the work of rebuilding. But their hearts would be encouraged again because God will make sure the work proceeds.
Do not despise the day of small things. God frequently begins small, with a few. Time after time, that is the record of Scripture. And there is a purpose in it: it stimulates faith. Who are the true believers? It is a day of small things. Who is going to trust God in a day of small things, and buckle down to the proclamation of the gospel and appealing prayer? The day of small things is designed to stimulate faith and prayer, and to deepen it and refine it. It is designed to give us the opportunity to see how impossible the work is. It makes us look around and think that the enemies are formidable, and the great enemy, Satan, is behind them. Oh, the difficulty of the work! All these things together are important. So I see the human impossibility of the task, and faith is aroused by the work of the Spirit and refined. Then the Lord is ready to build and increase the church and advance his kingdom.
But what are the eyes of the Lord? Well, the seven eyes in the stone represent the divine wisdom and knowledge. There is not a problem you will encounter which is not known to God, and permitted by him. There is not a problem you can encounter which he cannot limit or even remove if it please him, and strengthen you to overcome. And the eyes of the Lord know everything. Nothing is unseen by him. That is a tremendous comfort.
