In his wakened state Zechariah is asked to report what he sees in the vision. He describes a golden candlestick as the KJV renders it, or a lampstand, but later tells the angel he does not know what these symbols mean.
The whole image is a picture of God supplying the oil without the involvement of man. By this novel arrangement the lamp is kept constantly burning by the Lord because he will always have a testimony in the world through his people. Whatever the immediate difficulties they face, their enemies will not overpower them or prevent them from carrying out the work he has ordained. This task of rebuilding the physical temple will succeed, but so also will the far greater exploits of the church of Jesus Christ in the coming age. It is God who ensures his lampstand keeps burning, not his feeble people. Christ will build his church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
