Zechariah 5:1
Comments
Zechariah continues with this series of related visions which foretell church age blessings. We have seen there are these 9 visions. They are not hard, but they make use of good teaching symbols, and are intended to unlock the minds of the people from their Jewish outlook. God is showing that he wants to bless men spiritually. These sixth and seventh visions found in chapter 5 belong together and are about God’s judgments which are constantly operating in the world, and of course all judgments that are poured out in the world have at their heart the interests of the church. In the Old Testament, they served the interests of the typical church of the Jews. Even though by no means all Jews had real living faith, God was nevertheless pleased to deal with them as a church altogether, though they were mixed in that respect, and in New Testament age he deals with the church. Zechariah sees a flying roll or scroll. It represents the curse or condemnation of God. The context is the construction of the temple therefore the meaning is probably that when the New Testament age comes, God will not allow hypocrites in the church. No longer will there be a mixed multitude, a national church, although of course churches can make mistakes about who they admit into membership.
