Verses 8-10 are a summary of what the prophets who spoke to Judah before the exile had said, and which had been ignored. But they are also what God still says to those who have returned from Babylon.
Chapter 7 seems to say, by and large, the natural thing is for a child of God to backslide. ‘But have I not got a new nature?’ Yes, but the old nature is still there, and the natural thing is to backslide, to skip devotions and prayer, the reading of the word, the house of worship, the fellowship of God's people, the service of the Lord. The natural thing is to let things drift. The Christian life is glorious and it is a happy life, but there is an onerous side. It is a constant campaign against natural backsliding. All our lives we are waging a war against the natural tendency to backslide, and if we relax that, down we go.
