Further south were the Philistines who were watching what was happening in Syria and were filled with fear when they saw the fall of Tyre. If Tyre could not stand, how would their own far more poorly defended cities hope to survive? Zechariah tells of the judgments on the Philistines at this time.
The church can take enormous comfort from these events, because we too are often surrounded by those who we know are far stronger than us. God leaves us in this position to encourage us look, not to our own strength, but always to his strength. We could not resist without his help. No oppressor would pass through Judah anymore, because God would watch over them to protect them. Jerusalem continued as an oppressed place under Greeks, but it remained intact. God does not always give us the total deliverance we would like, but leaves us under a measure of pressure from the enemy. Secular humanism prowls around and we feel its powerful influence, but it cannot totally overcome us.
