Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on an ass’s colt is referred to in all four Gospels, and two of them quote this passage in Zechariah. This prophecy stands against the backdrop of titanic shifts in the fortunes of nations around Judah, and her smallness on the international scale at that time is set against the power of Greece that was set on dominating the entire known world.
As we consider faithfulness of prophecy, we are reminded to trust the promises of God. God may long delay before he brings his word to pass, but it is no less sure and certain for that. When Christ came he did not find many who received him, but he had not forgotten a single word given in Scripture. We must wait patiently for the fulfilment of his word, for he will not fail us, and he knows the best time. We say if you want to learn about the Saviour of the world, turn to the Gospels and the Book of Acts, but we are taught about him here also. He wins battles in a peaceful way. The gospel will conquer in every tongue, tribe, and nation.
