Zephaniah 1:10
Comments
This is the city collapsing, and the sound of the enemy approaching. The whole city will come down and lead to howling and cries. The fish gate in Jerusalem faced the north-northwest or others say north-northeast, and that was the direction from which the Chaldeans would come, and would enter the city. There will be a cry. This isn't a cry of warning to say, look, they are coming. This is in the Hebrew a cry of suffering and pain. They have come, and almost at once people are being slaughtered and there are great cries of pain and of agony. In other words, what this verse indicates is that the judgment will come as a total surprise. Although the people have been warned by Jeremiah, Zephaniah and others that this is going to happen, it comes as a total surprise.
Application
So it will be with the last judgment. Here we are, we have the word of God, we preach the word of God, the Bible is still the bestselling book in the world. People know about it; but many, many people who do know the message will still be amazed and shocked when the final day of judgment comes. Why? Because they shut their ears to it, and refused to believe it, even though their world was disintegrating around them; they tried to put it as far from their thinking as they could, and so the warning was wasted on them. The judgment of Jerusalem by the Babylonians, a literal historical event, is a kind of visual aid, a living enacted prophecy of further judgments when Christ would come at the end of the world.
