‘I will also stretch out my hand upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem’, and what follows shows that it is because of the idolatry and the Baal worship. So the structure is this: there is a final day of judgement when the whole present order will be brought to a close, and the world will be judged.
Idolatry is a big thing in the Bible because idolatry means finding alternatives to God. We are idolaters today, but we tend to have secular idols, we worship secular things, we have found secular alternatives to God. But that is why so much is said against idolatry. You may think that in the Western world idolatry is largely a thing of the past, but it isn't. Religious idolatry is, but not secular idolatry. Anyone who finds an alternative for God is an idolater in the sight of God. They derive their greatest joy, their uplift in time of discouragement, their fascination and interest, their motivation of living, their hope for the future, from their idol. It could be sport, it could be some special interest, it could be trust in man’s ingenuity, in science and technology. This has taken the place of God in their hearts.
