But then the verses go on with the theme of judgment. Zephaniah 2:1-3 is enough to tell us that God’s words of grace lie behind all these dire warnings, and that the offer of forgiveness is still there for those who return to the Lord with all their hearts.
God does not ignore the suffering of his people. Even the typical people of God, the nation of Israel, would be defended by the Lord, and he would take vengeance on their enemies. How much more Christ’s church, composed of his dear children! Israel had already been judged, and Judah is about to be severely disciplined, and it will all be for the sake of the believing remnant, who will be brought safely out of the furnace of affliction. However strong they appear, God will bring down every enemy that lifts itself up against the cause of truth.
If the world will be judged for its evil practices, how much more the people of God when they do the same thing! When it sees the world being judged, does the apostate church think God will spare it, a company of people that have had far more light, and therefore have far great accountability?
