The daughter of Zion, the Christian church, has so much to be thankful for. What could be more wonderful than the things that God has promised us? These are the real needs of the soul.
God never tells us to rejoice when there is no real cause to rejoice. The joy he gives his people is a solid joy, not like the joy of the world which is passing away. He is the God who never disappoints, but what is more disappointing than to rejoice in something, and then have that thing taken away, or proved to be unreal, inadequate, or insubstantial? That leaves the heart sick with the realisation that we lack grounds for true joy which we want so much. We are dependant beings. We cannot lift ourselves up, or plant hope in our own hearts. We rely on God to do great things for us, which we cannot do for ourselves. The worldling’s joy leads to sickness of heart because it must fade. He has attached himself to something which will drag him down with it.
