‘I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly’, or as the NKJ has it, ‘I will gather those who sorrow over the appointed assembly.’ The preposition ‘for’ is the Hebrew meaning ‘from’ or in context ‘over’ or ‘on account of’, and they mourn not at the nature of it, but at their absence from it.
So there are three fulfilments in view in the Prophet Zephaniah. You people are going to undergo seventy years captivity in Babylon. Zephaniah looks ahead and speaks to those Jews, those of you who really love the Lord, who are weary, who wonder whether there will ever be a day of blessing again. I will do it; I will gather my people back. Then again, there will be the long period of four hundred years between the Old Testament and the New Testament, when there is great suffering and great godlessness among the Jews, the rejection of Jesus Christ when he comes. Zephaniah speaks to the godly: ‘Just have patience. God will do a new thing. He will judge the wicked, and he will gather his people, and the Lord will be in the midst of them, there will be a new church, and he did it. And Zephaniah speaks to us also. You Christians live in the age of the Christian church, the gospel age, and now you are getting towards the end of that period, and you see atheism and godlessness come in, and high and holy things are spat upon and cursed and rejected. Don't despair, keep going with your gospel work. Don't let your hands hang down. God has a timetable, and he will come, and he will judge, and then he will gather all his own unto him, the final consummation to reign with him in everlasting glory.
So this is the prophecy of Zephaniah, the sum of all prophecies, a prophecy of destructions and deliverances. Destruction of the many, salvation for the few. Zephaniah closes by telling us that that gospel will never be suppressed until God's plan has finally been brought to pass.
