Nehemiah mentions one part of the wall where the women worked as something unusual. Perhaps there were no sons in this family, as in the case of Zelophehad (Number 26:33; 27:1-9). The pressing nature of the task meant that the women, who normally left the work to the men, became carriers and brick-layers themselves. Everybody had to learn new skills and do what they could, because otherwise the task could not be completed without dangerous delays.Some repaired huge sections of the wall (verse 13), they were noted for that. Others appeared to work alone; Malchiah is spoken of as if he worked alone (verse 14).
