The priests did not excuse themselves from the work on account of their privileged status. It was as important to them as to anyone else that the city where the temple of God resided should be restored. The testimony was of such great importance, and while Jerusalem remained a ruin, it was to a blot on Israel, and a stumbling block for any who sought the Lord. The Tekoites worked hard, even though their leaders let them down. When they had finished their part of the wall, they did not say that they had done enough and sit down to rest, but they found somewhere else to work. We work for the Lord without having our eye on what the next person is doing. We work according to the strength we are given by the Lord and we are thankful for more strength which enables us to do more work for him. We do not look for our ease or worry about sharing out the load equally. Even the goldsmiths and the merchants picked up the trowel.
